Chika

you can't tell from this photo how sweat I am. I love to be held and pet and give lots of head butts. Make sure you have a book at hand before you hold me, because once in your arms, I won't let go!

Best Friends LA Adoption Event

Best Friends Animal Society (base in Utah) hosts a super pet adoption event every year at the La Brea Tar pits. Kitten Rescue along with other organizations and city shelter participates. It is a very successful event where a lot of animals find a home. But unfortunately many will not, and the left over cats from all city shelters will be euthenised after this event. So at the end of the day, all private no kill organization will each take how ever many kitties they can handle to make sure not a single cat goes back to the shelter. This year Kitten Rescue took in 9 adult cats and I heard every cat was saved.
We had a section of the Sanctuary isolated from the general population set up and ready to take them in. After a long day, they arrived on one of our volunteer's car. We matched the paper work with the inpound numbers marked on the carrier boxes. One at a time, we opened the box and awwed at the kitty that popped his/her head out (like opening a Christmas gift). Each got their deworming, flea treatment and vaccination and weight. Once everything was done, they were put in their own enclosure. I don't think they knew that today was their lucky day. and that even though it looks just like the enclosure they were in at the shelters, they are no longer on death row and now have a brigher future ahead.

Sanctuary project phase 2

This weekend, we painted the walls. With the help of a group of USC students and several KR volunteers, the work got done pretty smoothly.
This is the "before" shot where the walls had primer on from last week.

And when all was done, here is how the kitchen area looks.

still a lot more work left to do, but things are getting done one at a time!

Dexter

I got the urn I ordered for Dexter this past weekend. It's cute! If you are looking for something other than your typical vase or box with a picture frame, check out Alex's custom pet urns at http://www.custompeturns.com. She welded the name on the back.

Sanctuary project phase 1

We have a lot of projects planned to fix up the Sanctuary. The walls of the kitchen and adjacent laundry room will be painted. Today we tackle prepping the walls. First we had to herd all the kitties out of the room. Then we scrubbed and cleaned the walls and eventually 2 coats of primer was applied.

You're so used to it that you don't realize how dull the walls were. With the white primer, the room looked so clean and bright.
While we were at it, some of us stayed and deep cleaned the floors and provided fresh bedding for the kids. Haddi was the first to dart back into the Kitchen

the black cat meeting

at the Kitten Rescue Sanctuary, there is a secret club - the "black cat alliance". They hold meetings at the kitchen area and the date/times of the meetings are disclosed through self destructing memos hidden inside pill pockets. You must be all black to be eligible to join, but they might make and exception if you are a tux who has connections to humans with access to food. Can you spot Izzy who is spying in this meeting?

RIP Jack

Sweet little Jack passed away today. He was a Leukemia positive kitty that lived at the Kitten Rescue Sanctuary. He had many health issues and went in and out of isolation many times, but always pulled through. He was loved by a dedicated KR volunteer who visited him all the time and spent time together in the sun. We will miss you
